The Hugh "Smiley" Hill Endowed Scholarship Program (Fund no. 7003)

The Hugh Smiley Hill Endowed Scholarship Program (Fund no. 7003)To honor longtime Dean of Students Hugh “Smiley” Hill, MD, the College seeks to complete a $1 million endowment in support of medical student scholarships. The need for more scholarships is critical. Approximately 85 percent of UF medical students receive financial aid or scholarships, and most graduates face an average loan debt of $95,000 upon graduation. Contributions to this endowment improve the UF College of Medicine for students in ways that are lasting and serve as a perpetual tribute to Dr. Hill, who is recognized as a superb teacher, clinician and mentor to medical students. When fully funded, the $1 million Hill Scholarship Endowment will be eligible to receive an additional $750,000 from the state, thus generating more than $90,000 annually in student scholarships.

The Harrell Fund (Fund no. 3575)

The Harrell Fund (Fund no. 3575)The Harrell Fund supports the Harrell Professional Development and Assessment Center where medical students gain realistic experience in patient care. UF was the first medical school in the Southeast and one of only 10 in the country to fully integrate standardized patients into teaching and testing. The center is named for the late George T. Harrell Jr., M.D., founding dean of the UF College of Medicine, who believed the practice of medicine was an art based on science. More than 1,000 students in the health sciences benefit from training in the Harrell Center to hone their skills in patient communication, physical examination and patient histories.
